AbstractTire-pavement noise is the dominant source of traffic noise especially at medium and high speeds. Thus, various transportation agencies and researchers are actively investigating for establishment of accurate test methods to measure traffic noise at source. Accurate measurements of tire-pavement noise are essential for understanding the mechanisms of noise generation and designing quieter pavements. This paper presents some preliminary results of ongoing research efforts in the State of Qatar with the aim of constructing quieter pavements. The researchers established a test setup for measuring the tire-pavement noise at source using the Onboard Sound Intensity (OBSI) method and examined the applicability of the system and the repeatability of acquired data. The test results demonstrated that the established setup is capable of measuring the sound intensity with excellent repeatability. In addition, the results showed that the tire-pavement noise is significantly affected by the vehicle speed and generally increases with the increasing of speed. Furthermore, the effect of vehicle speed is also analyzed at various frequencies and the results showed peak noise intensity displayed at frequency 1000 Hz regardless of the test speed.
